Botox is one of the most common, tried and tested, cosmetic procedures to combat frown lines, forehead wrinkles and other problem areas.
How botox works
Botox treatments typically last around 10 minutes.
Botox treatments work by injecting into the muscles of the problem areas, which then blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical responsible for transmission between nerve endings and the muscle.
This effectively weakens or relaxes the muscle that causes frown lines to form, giving a smoother appearance. Botox can also be used as an anti-ageing technique, or to create a brow lift.
Over time, dynamic wrinkles are formed on our faces as a result of years of changing facial expressions. When we make facial expressions, our facial muscles contract, which causes the skin to become wrinkled. Younger, more elastic skin, returns to the original position when resting. As skin ages, it has less elasticity and collagen, forming static wrinkles in the skin.
What is botox?
Botox is a drug made from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, which is found in the natural environment and is non-toxic. In the cosmetic industry, botox is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through botox injections.
Doctors and surgeons use botox treatments to treat a number of health and cosmetic problems, such as frown lines, dynamic wrinkles, forehead creases, and excessive sweating. Botox treatments are quick and relatively painless, so there is no downtime.
Am I suitable for botox treatment?
During your botox consultation, your concerns will be discussed and your problem areas will be highlighted. If you are suitable for therapy, a treatment plan can be developed especially for you, to get the desired results. As each person is different, and have different problem areas, each plan will be different.
Botox can treat:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Glabellar lines
- Crows feet
- Eyebrow lift
- Bunny lines
- Top lip lines
- Marionette lines
- ‘Dumpling/Apple’ chin
- Neck lines
Botox treatment: Results and recovery time
Botox is given through injections, so your doctor will disinfect the skin before injecting the treatment into each of the muscles causing the lines and wrinkles to appear. Numbing cream can be used if you are sensitive to injections, however this isn’t usually necessary.
You may experience slight swelling or redness where the injections were given, which will reduce within a few hours. In some cases, it can take up to 2 days for the swelling and redness to be completely gone. There is no downtime to botox treatment, so you can go back to your daily activities immediately after the procedure.
The results of botox treatments are noticeable within a week, however results can still be seen 4-5 weeks following your treatment. Following this, results can be seen for up to 4 months after your botox treatment.
